The Berger Collection

George Wright (1860-1942)
Gone to Ground
Oil on canvas
10 x 29 3/4 in. (25.4 x 75.5 cm)

In this painting, a companion to "The Cast," also in the Berger Collection (see the website entry), George Wright represents a relatively static stage of the hunt: the fox has "gone to ground" in a hole. Even so, the picture is full of noise, movement, and atmosphere; one can almost feel the sense of accomplishment once the fox has been tracked down.

Private collection, U.S.; Christie's, New York, December 6, 1996, lot 149
