These rural workers are shown using a team of four horses to help them with their daily toil. The workers are not individualized characters with their own identities but anonymous-looking, almost featureless types. Just like the rocks that surround them, and the huge boulder on the trailer, they are hard, rough-edged, and unrefined. The horses, on the other hand, are highly detailed, finished, and polished, and seem to have their own unique personalities. One of the horses even looks around in disbelief at the two quarrymen, who expect the animals to pull the massive load.
