Michael Dahl (ca. 1659-1743)

Michael Dahl was born in Stockholm, Sweden, where he trained before coming to London in about 1682. He probably worked in the studio of Sir Godfrey Kneller, at the time the leading portraitist in England. Between 1684 and 1689, Dahl traveled throughout Europe, mainly visiting Paris, Venice, and Rome. He settled permanently in London in 1689; by the early years of the eighteenth century, he had begun to rival Kneller as England's foremost portrait painter.
